EE (see) Sound Word List

By Rodney Everson

The /ee/ sound, often called the long-e sound, is one of five sounds that are named by the name of a single vowel letter. The letters are a, e, i, o, and u. This class of vowel sounds has many spelling options. In the case of the /ee/ sound, there are nine common spellings, but only eight of those appear in one-syllable words.

Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 245 of them are one-syllable words in which the vowel sound is /ee/. The various spellings of the /ee/ sound are "e" "ee", "ea", "e-e", "ey", "i", "ie", and "y".

The most common spellings are "ea" and "ee" in one-syllable words. The "y" spelling is found in no one-syllable words in the database, and the "ey" spelling is in only one word (key). This is a great list for locating simple words that have a common spelling of the /ee/ sound, such as the "ie" in field, shriek, and thief, because the list is organized by the vowel spellings.
