IE (tie) Sound Word List
The /ie/ sound, often called the long-i sound, is one of five sounds that are named by the name of a single vowel letter. The letters are a, e, i, o, and u. This class of vowel sounds has many spelling options. In the case of the /ie/ sound, there are five common spellings, and all appear in one-syllable words.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 158 of them are one-syllable words in which the vowel sound is /ie/. The various spellings of the /ie/ sound are "i", "ie", "i-e", "igh", and "y".
The most common spelling is "i-e" in one-syllable words. The "y" spelling is an ending in all but one word (rhyme). This is a great list for locating simple words that have a common spelling of the /ie/ sound, such as the "igh" in fight, high, and slight, because the list is organized by the vowel spellings.
