The /a/ sound, often called the short-a sound, is one of five sounds that form the class of Basic Code vowel sounds. That class generally appears as the middle sound of a three-letter word, or when followed by the letters ck, x, tch, dg, or dge, or in a closed syllable within a longer word, and is spelled with a, e, i, o, or u.
This is a useful list for locating simple words to practice both beginning and ending consonant blends while the vowel sound remains unchanged.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 258 of them are one-syllable words in which the vowel sound is /a/. Among the words in the database, the /a/ sound is always represented by the letter "a".
