/j/ Sound Spelled DJ Word List

By Rodney Everson

The /j/ sound has several spellings, j, g, ge, dge, dg, and dj.

The "dj" spelling of the /j/ sound is very uncommon and, while it occurs in a few words, "dj" is not taught as a digraph in the OnTrack Reading curriculum. Instead, as noted below the list, it is better to form a “perfect pronunciation” of the words in which it occurs.

Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, four of them are one-syllable words with the /j/ sound spelled "dj".

Note on the word divisions: Each word is divided into chunks determined by the unique and effective OnTrack Reading Multisyllable Method. The chunks are not syllables.
