OnTrack Reading Phonics Program

Teach your student the phonics advanced code in as little as 8 weeks with our 170-page workbook and instruction manual.

The /j/ sound has several spellings, j, g, ge, dge, dg, and dj.

The "g" spelling of the /j/ sound is very common and, as shown on this list, is almost always followed by an "e", "i", or "y". While that might indicate value in teaching a Rule of g similar to a Rule of c, there are subtle differences that argue otherwise. (See the links for further explanation.)

Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 110 of them are one-syllable words with the /j/ sound spelled "g".

Note on the word divisions: Each word is divided into chunks determined by the unique and highly effective OnTrack Reading Multisyllable Method. The chunks are not syllables.
