The /g/ sound has five common spellings, g, gg, gh, gu, and gue. The gue representation of the /g/ sound tends to be found at the end of a word. It appears in enough words that it warrants teaching as a digraph. Teaching it also supports the decision to teach gu at the beginning of chunks in words like guide and guard as a digraph for the /g/ sound.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, eight of them are words with the /g/ sound spelled "gue".
