/g/ Sound Spelled GH Word List
By Rodney Everson
The /g/ sound has five common spellings, g, gg, gh, gu, and gue.
In the OnTrack Reading curriculum, the digraph "gh" represents only the /g/ sound, whereas other curricula sometimes treat it as also representing the /f/ sound at the end of words like laugh and cough. The approach at OnTrack Reading, treating "ugh" as a digraph representing the /f/ sound in the few words it occurs, simplifies matters considerably.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, five of them are words with the /g/ sound spelled "gh".
Note on the word divisions: Each word is divided into chunks determined by the unique and effective OnTrack Reading Multisyllable Method. The chunks are not syllables.
