U (touch) Sound Word List with the “ou” Spelling
By Rodney Everson
Four of the five basic code vowel sounds, /e/, /i/, /o/, and /u/, have one or two alternative spellings. The /u/ sound has only one, ou.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, two of them are one-syllable words in which the vowel sound /u/ is not spelled just "u".
The "ou" spelling of the /u/ sound is not well-represented in one-syllable words in the database, only young and touch, but it occurs more frequently in multisyllable words, particularly in those ending in "ous" (nervous).
