O (hot) Sound Word List
The /o/ sound, often called the short-o sound, is one of five sounds that form the class of Basic Code vowel sounds. That class generally appears as the middle sound of a three-letter word, or when followed by the letters ck, x, tch, dg, or dge, or in a closed syllable within a longer word, and is spelled with a, e, i, o, or u.
This is a useful list for locating simple words to practice both beginning and ending consonant blends while the vowel sound remains unchanged.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 151 of them are one-syllable words in which the vowel sound is /o/. Among the words in the database, that sound is also represented in 42 one-syllable words by the letter "a", although in some regional dialects most of those words are pronounced with an /aw/ sound. For spelling purposes, it is useful to have students say them with the /o/ sound, however.
