E (red) Sound Multisyllable Word List

OnTrack Reading Phonics Program

Teach your student the phonics advanced code in as little as 8 weeks with our 170-page workbook and instruction manual.

The five lists of the /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, and /u/ sounds spelled only with a, e, i, o, and u are organized so that each such word only shows up on one of the five lists. This list of /e/ words spelled e only contains words where all the vowel sounds are the /a/ or /e/ sound. This list of /e/ words spelled e only contains words where any other vowel sounds are /a/ sounds.

Taken together, the five lists cited above will hold all words in the database that have only Basic Code spellings of their vowel sounds. These lists can be very useful for putting together stories or assignments that have words with spellings already covered in the curriculum. This list is not a list of all words in the database containing the /e/ sound. For example, the word skeptic will be found in the corresponding /i/ list.

Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 74 of them are multisyllable words with the vowel sound /e/ in which the only other vowel sound might be /a/.

Note on the word divisions: Each word is divided into chunks determined by the unique and highly effective OnTrack Reading Multisyllable Method. The chunks are not syllables.

The OnTrack Reading curriculum also avoids teaching the schwa sound. Instead, making a “perfect pronunciation” is emphasized for spelling purposes. Thus, the word cement, chunked ce ment, is taught to be pronounced with two /e/ sounds, rather than the first chunk using the schwa sound.
