The /m/ sound has five common spellings, m, mm, me, mb, and mn.
The "mn" spelling of the /m/ sound typically occurs at the end of words, or of chunks in longer words. Sometimes when suffixes are added, the "m" and "n" revert to their individual sounds, as with "hymn" and "hym-nal" or "con-demn" and "con-dem-na-tion"
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, five of them are words with the /m/ sound spelled "mn".
