/j/ Sound Spelled DGE and DG Word List
By Rodney Everson
The /j/ sound has several spellings, j, g, ge, dge, dg, and dj.
In the OnTrack Reading curriculum, the "dge" spelling is one of four Markers that mark the preceding vowel letter as a First Vowel Sound, that is, a short sound. When the letter "e" is needed for the vowel sound in the following chunk, the digraph "dg" represents the /j/ sound instead.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 30 of them are words with the /j/ sound spelled "dge" or "dg".
Note on the word divisions: Each word is divided into chunks determined by the unique and highly effective OnTrack Reading Multisyllable Method. The chunks are not syllables.
