The letter x is the only letter that represents two sounds said together. For example, fox has four sounds, /f/o/k/s/, with the last two represented by x.

In the OnTrack Reading curriculum, the "x" spelling is one of four Markers that mark the preceding vowel letter as a First Vowel Sound, that is, a short sound.

In some words, such as exact and example, the letter "x" sounds in normal speech like /g/z/. We tend to say “egz-act” and “egz-am-ple.” For spelling purposes it is preferable to form a “perfect pronunciation” of those words using the /k/s/ sounds instead.

Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 95 of them are words with the /ks/ sounds spelled "x".

Note on the word divisions: Each word is divided into chunks determined by the unique and highly effective OnTrack Reading Multisyllable Method. The chunks are not syllables.
